“Lewandowski more clinical than Neymar and Mbappe” – Choupo-Moting

Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting believes teammate Robert Lewandowski is the best finisher in the world, ahead of former Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

Choupo-Moting switched from one side of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League final to the other in the summer after joining continental treble winners Bayern from losing finalists PSG.

The move has seen the former Hamburg, Mainz and Schalke forward slot in as Lewandowski’s back-up at Bayern, and Choupo-Moting has been more impressed with what he has seen in training and games from Bayern’s No.9 than what he saw at PSG, alongside the likes of Mbappe and Neymar.

“When it comes to killer instinct, Lewandowski is currently number one,” Choupo-Moting told SportBild. “It’s crazy how often he scores. It’s not luck, it’s skill.

“He has rightly been named Europe’s Footballer of the Year. I can also copy one or two things from him: how he controls the ball and hits different types of shots. We immediately had a good relationship here.”

The 31-year-old forward has quickly settled into life at the Allianz Arena, scoring twice in the DFB Cup first round as well as making four Bundesliga appearances – including one start – allowing Lewandowski to recuperate during Bayern’s jam-packed schedule defending their Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League crowns.

The Hamburg-born forward – who has represented Cameroon 53 times internationally – spent two seasons in the French capital and admits he was happy in Paris. But when Bayern made contact during the short summer break following the Bavarians’ Champions League final triumph, he didn’t hesitate.

“Paris wanted to extend with me, I was happy there,” Choupo-Moting said. “But I always kept my eye on Germany and also checked out the top clubs to see if there was a place for me there.
“Then my agent got in touch with Bayern. After Hasan Salihamidzic contacted me, and I spoke to Hansi Flick, it was clear: I want to do that! It’s a huge honour to play for the biggest club in Germany as a Hamburg boy. Munich is a fantastic city. In terms of my career, this was a massively important step.”

Choupo-Moting will be looking to continue his bright start to life at Bayern in the weeks ahead and, with seven matches to be played between now and Christmas, will have further chances to show what he has learned from Lewandowski.
